Will dropping an year for JEE (Mains and Advanced) be a good exam strategy?

If you are going to join any coaching, then it is a very good step.

See, if your JEE score is below 70, then there is very less chance for you to score good marks in the next year. (I am talking about the chances, there can be exceptions but exceptions are very less)
Still, if you know that you won't get any decent college this time and have a decent grasp over the basics, then go for dropping. -
I will say that you should think that if you will be able to maintain or gain the momentum needed to study bcz you have to study both 11-12 in same year and also you have to study it again in one year only so the main tjing is you should try to think about some topics if u think you can redo those topics with intest yhan go for it or else move ahead and explore your interest

if you are serious about it than it is an apportunity for you.
