Substantial changes in CAT syllabus have occurred during last 2-3 years of CAT exam and as such the different topics included in all the sections of CAT 2017 exam syllabus may throw different questions which are not traditionally asked in Common Admission Test CAT conducted by Iims. CAT 2017 is the entrance exam for admission to 20 Iims and other top B-schools like FMS, SPJIMR, MDI, IMI, IMT, BIMBs, TAP MI among others. This year IIM Lucknow is convening CAT 2017. The exam will be held on November 26, 2017 in 2 sessions.

As for preparation strategy, aspirants shouldn't change anything. Focus on your strengths and weakness like you planned to. However, exam taking strategy will change. Candidates have to attempt each section for 60 minutes. There's no option of attempting your the strongest section first or last - it's all decided by CAT authorities. Non-MCQ questions are making an entrance this year.

There is no need to change your entire methods and strategies that you are using for CAT studies. All it is required to keep updated with the latest articles and updates from the Iims official Portal regarding to CAT preparations. By the time you have to just find some extra resources to solve additional question bank and prepare.

Good luck.

The changes mean that CAT as an MBA entrance test, is evolving. It means that Iims still haven't reached an ideal test pattern and may keep experimenting with strategy. The sectional time limit which was withdrawn in 2014 had helped the CAT takers to focus more on their strong areas in the exam. However, the sectional time constraint of one hour was reintroduced in 2015. It is possible that IIM Lucknow may again allow it. Testing window in CAT 2017 may go to 2 days from present 1 day as the aspirants have been demanding it since last year
Change in number of Non-MCQs could be there or the Non-MCQs may remain absent in CAT 2017. In 2016 IIM Bangalore reduced the number of Non-MCQs from 28 to 25. It is very much possible that this number is reduced further. Another anticipation of the aspirants is that I

How close to the actual CAT 2017
The purpose of CAT 2017 official mock test released by IIM Lucknow is to give idea about the pattern of real CAT 2017 exam. Important points:
Many questions in CAT 2017 official Mock test shows 5 answer options while other questions have only 4 answer options. This anomaly is more in Quant section. There would be only 19 Non MCQ type of questions in CAT 2017 exam divided in 3 sections. VARC 10 Non-MCQs; DILR- 4 Non-MCQs; Quant - 5 Non-MCQs. Last year CAT had 25 Non-MCQs. Official CAT 2017 Mock contains 100 questions
No penalty of negative marking will be applied to wrong answer in Non-MCQs.

1 -The sectional time limit will also be there I. e. Candidates will be allotted exactly 60 minutes for answering questions in each section and they cannot switch from one section to another while answering questions in a section. This exam pattern is exactly on the same lines as that of 2016 CAT exam conducted by IIM Bangalore.
2- Testing window in CAT 2017 may go to 2 days from present 1 day as the aspirants have been demanding it since last year.

Though the pattern has changed, the significance and importance of the exam hasn't. It is better to think of the importance, focus on the strengths, work on the weaknesses, and practice as much as possible. Last year, the DILR section was the most difficult. This year the trend may be followed again. It would be advisable not yo think about the pattern but about the level of difficulty of the questions. With the introduction of Non-MCQ, students will get a benefit of attempting such questions as they do not fetch negative marks.

Also you can say that, they are making the quants section easier and making DILR section harder, so that they can take more non- engineers without compromising on the quality of students.

CAT exam format was changed from paper based exam to CAT online computer based test in 2009. Even after that CAT paper pattern continued changing from 3 sections to 2 and then CAT pattern was changed to 3 sections in 2015.
