5.21 A stone of mass 0.25 kg tied to the end of a string is whirled round in a circle of radius 1.5 m with a speed of 40 rev./min in a horizontal plane. What is the tension in the string ? What is the maximum speed with which the stone can be whirled around if the string can withstand a maximum tension of 200 N ?

Mass of the stone, m = 0.25 kg
Radius of the circular path = 1.5 m
Speed = 40 rev/min = 0.67 rev/s
Angular velocity, = 2 = 2 = 4.19 rev/s
The tension of the string, T = m r = 0.25 = 6.59 N
Maximum tension of the string, = 200 N
From the equation = /r, =
= 200 /0.25
= 34.64 m/s

For 2 kg block
T – 2g sin37 = 2a . (i)
For 4 kg block
4g – 2T =
2g – T = a . (ii)
T = (2g – a)
2g – a – 2g × = 2a
3a = 2g ×
