(c) From parallax measurement, the sun is found to be at a distance of about 400 times the earth-moon distance. Estimate the ratio of sun-earth diameters.

    This is a short answer type question as classified in NCERT Exemplar

    (a)

     l=RE; r= 60RE

    θ = R E 60 R E = 1 60 r a d = 1 60 × 180 π d e g r e e = 3 π 1 o

    Hence angle subtend is 2 o

    (b) But in 2nd case it is given that moon is (½)° and earth is 2o so it become 4 times.

    (c) To measure parallax sun is about 400 times the earth moon distance hence r s u n r m o o n = 400

    To finding ratio of

    so DsunDearth=100

    so DsunDearth=100
