Exam for IAS Prelims is an objective type of exam where multiple choice questions are put. There are generally 4 alternative answers given and one has to choose the right or the most appropriate answer. There is negative marking but not 1 for 1. Less than 1 mark is deducted for 1 wrong answer. I am not very sure but I think 2 or 3 wrong answers result in deduction of 1 mark. There ae two different papers; one for general knowledge and other for your optional subject. Both are held on the same day and are of 3 hours duration. For good study material you need to contact coaching institutes of repute. Rau's coaching classes, T.I.M.E. are a couple of more reputed one's in Delhi. You need to have good knowledge of current affairs. So start reading newspapers regularly. Competition sucess review and Pratiyogita darpan magazines can be of great help. Your study needs to be very extensive and in qute a detail. Appearing in mick tests and taking part in discussions helps alot. The prelims for 2011 would be held in June 2011, the notification for which would come by mid of Feb 2011. Keep a watch over the dates through employment news paper.

To pursue a career in Indian Civil Services - IAS/ IPS, requires to write and qualify the UPSC exams , which are conducted in two phases: Preliminary test (CSAT) and Main Written Test.
CSAT: It is an Objective type examination consisting of Two Papers that is common to all candidates from 2011 having special emphasis on testing their aptitude for civil services as well as on general knowledge.
Main Exam.: Those who qualify the CSAT exam are shortlisted for the Main exam. It is a descriptive (essay type) examination. The General Studies, Essay paper, English Paper are common to all candidates and with this a candidate has two optional subjects to choose from the given options and a language paper of his / her choice. After qualifying the test, shortlisted candidates are called for the interviews and then the final selection takes place.
