It is compulsory to pass in 50 percent paper ( 5 out 10) for getting promoted to 2nd year. In other words in 2 semesters combined ( each semester consists of 5 papers) clearing 5 papers will sufficient. Which menas effectively you can miss an entire semester and you could still be promoted to 2nd year. ( Although my advice would be not to be so adventurous)
Like wise for promotion to 3rd year Clearing 15 papers out of 20 is compulsory. And in final year it is advisable to clear all the papers ( 10 papers) in one go otherwise most probably you'll have to wait for long to appear for supplementary which might cost you an entire year. Note - you can appears for areas of 1st semester in 3rd semester only ( not in 5th semester) for 2md semester in 4th semester only, for 3rd semester and 4th semester in 5th and 6th semester respectively and supplementary for 5th and 6th semester.
