this is a good question actually. contemporary dance borrows a lot from classical ballet. although finesse is important in both, one can be less inclined to "pointe" in contemporary. Also contemporary is more "Now". Some use the term "modern" and "contemporary" interchangeably. However different schools have their own view towards the difference between the two. These days classical showcases are seen in theatricals, while contemporary is just everywhere. Contemporary is also believed to be more expressive, although this opinion again varies from person to person.
