The naming of the courses like professional or academic was done after the independence mainly to have an equal workforce so that country's economy could work better. Professional courses like -BBA, BCA etc were introduced for direct entry into jobs without waiting for a higher degree. But now a days both of these need atleast master's to get a good job.
The major difference in the two is:The professional course mainly lead to specific career path like BBA leads to MBA, BCA to MCA. With academic degrees you can opt various choices in education, research, management etc.
Hope that suffice.
