There are four core branches of engineering i.e mechanical, chemical, civil and electrical. Each of these branches has developed into many specialised sub-branches. The number of engineering degrees available has increased dramatically in last few years. For example, electrical engineering is further divided in specialisations such as electronics, instrumentation, telecommunication, computer science, information technology, etc. Mechanical engineering also has specialisations such production, aeronautical, etc. Chemical engineering is further divided in petrochemical, polymer technology, etc.
Trends in various engineering branches scope and opportunities vary with multiple parameters such as economic growth, geopolitics, innovation and technology changes, shortage of skills, quality of education, changes social capital, etc. Therefore, predicting branch wise trends is very difficult. Currently, the scope for B.Tech in CSE and ECE graduates is the highest. Mechanical engineering is an evergreen branch of engineering with not much change in scope in last 5 decades.
