1. Earn a Bachelor's or Master's degree in journalism or a related field. A degree focusing on newspaper reporting, writing and layout design is best.
2. Work at college newspaper to gain experience and take an internship or part-time job with a local or national newspaper.
3. Talk to a college adviser or career counselor about job placement services and career requirements.
4. Apply directly to a newspaper of your choice, look through classified ads and search online job sites to find particular openings. Apply for positions you feel you are truly qualified for, but realize you may have to take a lower editor position before applying for managing editor or editor-in-chief positions.
