Well there are two entrance exams for IIT's one is JEE (Mains) and JEE (Advanced) just like civil service exams like prelims and mains in UPSC. To get IIT's you should qualify JEE (Mains) that means you should be in top 150000 and also you should be in top 20 percentile in your intermediate board exams. Then you will eligible for JEE (Advanced) and in JEE (Advanced ) you should be in top 8000 rank some times 9000 above candidates can also opt for IIT's but some times the available seats less than 9000 so better you should get less than 8000 rank. If you want to get in desired branch of engineering in desired IIT's you should score with respective IIT's. Ok!

To take admission in Merchant Navy, you need to pass 12th in Science (Physics, Chemistry, Maths) with 1 year pre-sea training as a deck cadet.
You can also join it directly after B.Tech in marine engineering, mechanical, electrical, electronics & telecommunication, naval architect.
If you pursue B.Sc (Nautical Science) in the officer cadre, it will lead you to become captain after 5-7 years of experience.
Except marine engineering candidates, others have to undergo a 10 months pre-sea training which is offered by many institute and port trusts or recruiting company itself. After that you will be appointed as a 5th or junior engineer. It will take 5-7 years depending on your abilities to become 'chief engineer'.
