Using generative AI tools to create a personal statement is never a good idea. These tools typically plagiarize from multiple sources on the internet and the generic content generated by them can easily be detected by AI-detection tools that many universities use to gauge content authenticity. If your AI-generated personal statement gets flagged by such tools, not only do you create a bad impression for yourself, your university application can also be rejected in such cases.

To customize your SOP or Personal Statement for a specific university, research the university and programme first. You can then list out which specific features of the programme and the university suit your interests and how would they help you achieve your goals. You can also describe how the university would be the ideal lauchpad for you, given the curriculum, faculty or in-house amenities it provides.

The commonest mistakes that applicants make in their Personal Statements is being ambiguous or boastful, focusing on achievements without any personal reflection, adding generic information, using age-old tropes, or making them into an autobiography. It is therefore important to ensure that your personal statement is specific, authentic, and connects your experiences to your motivation for choosing the program.

To make your Personal Statement stand out, try to mention unique personal stories, experiences, challenges, or moments that inspired your interests. Be as original and reflective as possible, demonstrating qualities like self-awareness, awareness about the field you are applying for and a clear connect between your academic/professional experiences and your academic goals, hinting at your suitability for the program.

If you are applying to the same university, which requires both an SOP and a personal statement, it is wise not to self-plagiarize and share redundant information with the universities. However, you may use portions of the content in the SOP in your personal statement after rewording them. That being said, it is always better to share original and unique content, which assures the universities about your credibility.
