You need about $1-2.5M to implement this plan.
The steps are:
Become an angel investor.
Become a well-known angel investor.
Become a VC.
This is surprisingly easy to do, with the hardest step being the "get 1-2.5M dollars" zeroth step of the plan. If you have that money, you can implement this. Ideally you should have some sort of value-added domain expertise in something that you can offer to entrepreneurs (e.g. you've started your own company, technology, sales, management, you're a famous actor, etc). This isn't necessary, but it will give you an incremental boost on running through this process faster.
First, keep in mind that $1-2.5M means you can make about 50 investments at between 25-50k, spread out over about two years. Research on angel investment returns indicates that the diversification threshold for reaching a positive return is about 20 investments, thus you can make about 25 investments over two years. But you don't even need to see positive returns for this plan to work (see later).
What you do is you start looking for deals. Go to where developers are, sign up for angel mailing lists (e.g. Angelist), go to demo days, and try to tag along on follow-on deals with other more well-known investors, join a syndicate. Once you're in a deal, try to be as helpful as possible. This is the only key step. If there is a situation where you might take a hit personally (i.e. see decreased returns) versus helping the entrepreneur, always help the entrepreneur. Always make quick, clean decisions (even if it is a no, be quick and clear), and never break terms. When they send you docs to sign, sign and return them as quickly as possible, don't negotiate - you are just wasting everyone's time. And if they ask you for a favor, try to hustle and do as much as you can for them. Even if the startup is failing, stick by them no matter what.
All of the above is laying the groundwork for your investment in your reputation. Do not be afraid to "lose" money or time on this step: you are investing that money and time to build your reputation as a helpful, honest, reliable angel. Quite quickly, word will get around that you are a good angel. Entrepreneurs ask each other how to raise money, who is a good source of advice for so-and-such, and your name will get mentioned. When people ask to meet you, take the meeting and find a way to help them. Your reputation will build pretty fast - within a year or two.

The answer below is a little tailored towards campus placements and my selection in Google. In case of off campus placements, the process remains the same, but you just have to make sure that you get that interview call. And you can expect the number of interviews to be more.
Getting a job in a good product based company can be tough. The recruitment procedure is thorough and grueling. In my experience resumes don't play a very important role beyond the function of getting the first interview call. Even in that the resume is mostly used as a rejection criteria rather than acceptance criteria.
In reality nobody cares if you organized the technical fest, headed the Cultural Council, were the sponsorship lead, because at the end of the day they want you to write awesome code. Often the only thing that they ask from your resume is to describe your favorite project, which too mostly is an ice breaker. If you want to get a job in a good software firm, learn to code and that too code well. And not only code you must learn how to develop things. Contributing to an open source project and working on algorithms and data structures is important.

The best way to get selected is to practice loads of interview questions for the company that you are appearing, and not only solving them but also learning them. You should also watch MIT Online Course videos at ocw.mit.edu/courses
Coming onto things more specific to the placement time. Placement season can be a tough time, especially since you have to appear for so many written tests, listen to ppts (that hardly help) and then prepare for interviews. However it gets more stressful when you see others getting placed and you losing out, sometimes out of sheer bad luck. The right thing to do is to maintain your nerve and understand that luck also plays an important part.
However one of the most important things for interviews is that you should learn how to represent your knowledge accurately and confidently. You may know a lot of things but it is of no use if the interviewer does not get to know that. So you must be confident and clear in your answers and try not to fumble up things. Panic attack is a very common thing during an interview and it generally happens if you

ARRIVAL AT THE VENUE:
Each of the candidates reach the venue and gather in the auditorium. There are 144 aspirants pre divided in 12 groups of 12 students each. Each student is assigned a buddy (a senior). A presentation is given by the college providing college information. After 20 mins of presentation, the buddy takes his/her respective group to the respective classroom for the Group Discussion.
Group Discussion:
Once in the classroom, you will be supervised by 2 panelists. Candidates are given only one, yes one topic, time for which has been decided as 25 mins.
BREAK TIME:
After Group Discussion, there is break time of 30 mins during which the Personal Interview starts. During the half an hour, candidates can interact with their buddies, and ask college related information.
PERSONAL INTERVIEW:
There is only one PI. It will be taken by 2 panelists. The PI time is generally 10 to 20 mins. The questions asked are more academics and work related.
