If P 1 = P then P2=P+5% of P = 1 . 0 5 P .

From Boyle’s law, PV=constant therefore,

V 2 V 1 = P 1 P 2 = P 1 . 0 5 P = 1 0 0 1 0 5

Fractional change in volume is

Δ V V = V 2 V 1 V 1 = 1 0 0 1 0 5 1 0 5 = 5 1 0 5

Therefore, percentage change in volume is

ΔVV×100%=5105×100%=4.76%

That is, volume decreases by 4 . 7 6 % .
