Cation is formed when one or more electrons are removed from the outermost orbit of the electron. So, when the electron is removed from an atom the mass and the size of the electron decreases. So, the size of cation is less when compared to atom. The reason is that when the electron is removed from the outermost orbit if only 1 electron is there in the outermost orbit then when that electron is removed from that orbit the orbit vanishes and hence the size decreases and also the inter-nuclear force also effects the size. So, when an electron is removed from the inter-nuclear force decreases and hence the decreases.
