::No more optional paper in UPSC Civil Services prelims from 2011 onwards::
Setting the stage for civil service aspirants to be tested for their aptitude rather than their memory, the government on Monday announced the outline of the new Civil Services Aptitude Test (CSAT) and changes in the General Studies paper that would requires aspirants to be as well versed in environmental studies say climate change as social development.
In Paper I, candidates will be tested on their knowledge of Current Events of national and international importance, Indian History, the Indian National Movement, Indian and world Geography, including the physical, social and Economic Geography of India and the world. Questions will also be asked on the Indian Polity and governance as well as the Constitution, the political system, panchayati raj, public policy and rights.
Paper II will consist of : English Language Comprehension Skills of the Class X level Interpersonal Skills Including Communication Skills Logical reasoning and Analytical Ability Decision Making and Problem Solving as well as General Mental Ability.
So, better to opt for coaching right from now.

Now lets come to the most important part which is self study which is very essential as IPS or UPSC exams are not that easy to crack and to crack the you really have to prioritize your time. For self study you can start with reading newspapers and books related to current affairs and Gk, if you want you can refer to Manorama Year book which is one good book for GK and current affairs.
