Journalism can cover both print and broadcast journalism. Print journalism courses can include newspapers, magazines and the internet, photojournalism (taking and selecting photos and other images, darkroom development, etc.), interview techniques, a bit of desktop publishing and layout/design (putting together a newspaper or magazine), media law (slander, libel, ethics, etc.) and your basic writing/editing/generating ledes and story ideas. Broadcast journalism courses can include TV and radio (and I guess now, the internet -- e.g. podcasting, etc.), including editing stories, electronic news gathering, writing for TV and radio, videography, etc. As a journalism student, you might intern at a TV station, a radio station, a newspaper, web site or magazine. The courses have a very heavy writing/editing component and are focused in developing writing, editing and critical thinking skills.
Mass Communications is more broad-based, and dabbles in the fields of psychology, sociology, history, etc. and how they relate to communication as a whole. For example, you could learn about the impact of music on society, subliminal advertising, art therapy, etc . anything where communications is used outside of just traditional writing and editing. In my Mass Comm classes, we learnt about public relations (press releases, interviews, event coordination, publicity, etc.), marketing (publicity, promotions, creating a buzz, "viral" marketing, etc.), advertising (branding, logos, feminist perspectives, historical perspectives and their evolution, etc.), pop culture (movies, TV, music), speechwriting, etc. and how it impacted society, communications, etc. As a student, you could intern at traditional places like community newspapers and TV stations, but you might also intern at an advertising / marketing / multimedia agency, or a public relations company.
