Well, if you've heard for reliable sources like The Hindu or the Economic Times it is true. The salary at the top 3 IIMs are very high.
Before I mention the salaries, let me start by saying that there are two types of placements:
The Summer Placements: These are internships and salary may range from a few lakhs to even 10,000 per month and is for a period of two to three months. This internship may turn into a full time job based on your performance.
Final Placements: The type of job you get depends on your two years you spent at IIM, your grades, your extra-curriculars and internship. Your final placement salary may range from One Crore to 50,000 or so per month and it depends on the IIM you study in also.
Here are the median and highest salaries offered to students by companies last year (2015) at IIM-, IIM-B and IIM-C.
IIIM-A:
Highest salary: 1.38 crore and 70 lakhs as highest international salary
Median Salary: Average domestic salary would be about 18 lakhs.
IIM-B:
Highest salary: Highest domestic salary was 53 lakhs whereas, highest international salary was 73.38 lakhs.
Median Salary: Average domestic salary would be about 18-20 lakhs.
IIM-C:
Highest salary: 33.7 lakhs was the highest salary in 2015.
Median Salary: 17-18 lakhs was the median salary last year.

Tejas, you do not need to pursue engineering for animation or vfx. If you're creative, you can always consider going for Design and Animation. This is a field where nobody cares for your qualification, they only see if you can do quality work. In fact, the University Model has not succeeded in any Skill field across the world. A good mentor and wise selection of courses with a good school, followed by diligent learning, would get you a head start in your career. However, you must check your suitability for this field. Animation is an art form and a very demanding career. It has ample opportunities for the creatively talented people. Opportunities lie in UI Design, Graphic Design, Storyboarding, Animation Design, Game Design, 3D Modelling, Texturing and Lighting, Dynamics and VFX and of course animation (2D and 3D). Of course at the top of the pile lies Concept Designing - these people are required by Event Companies, Animation Studios, VFX Studios, and of course Game Studios. However, choosing between these must be done after seeing your performance in each of these. So going for a generic course covering all or most of these would be the best way to get started in these careers. Typically you should have good sketching skills to be able to make a sound career in this (if you work hard you can improve your drawing skills tremendously). Soumya, you'd have to take a call here whether you want to become a professional or need a job. if you need a job, then why are you looking for a professional vocation? There are several careers in media in writing, production or post production. you can become a reporter, actor or getting behind the camera to direct, cinematograph or do finishing work as an editor, compositor or a VFX artist who can add reality to 3D vizualizations. you may even be a graphic artist who designs the screens, or an animator who brings stories to life as a proxy actor for onscreen characters. you can get into production, whether live or animated. You can be a story writer who writes for live and animated screens or even roll the story into a video/ pc game. you can be a script writer who would stop at nothing to give wonderful scene setups to bring the story to life. you could be an artist who designs characters or who storyboards the film for live or animated performance. you can also double up as a voice over artist who gives his/ her voice to the characters or dub for movie stars, or even be a radio star. you can alternatively look at web for a web of careers in web design, online marketing, search engine optimization, content writing, social media promoting. Any extra skill can be used in this. So it turns out to be one of the most challenging as well as satisfying careers. Sure not recommended for the weak hearted. Do remember that digital design careers (e.g. web design, graphics, UI design, animation, vfx, multimedia) give better profits since they can be delivered anywhere in the world & hence may earn in dollars - resulting in better rewards for designers. Kishor, I am not sure how good you are with maths and programming. If you are, then you must pick up a language whether PHP/ HTML5 (web dev), .Net (for software dev) Java/ Android (for apps) or C#/ Unity (for games). However like i mentioned, you must be good with programming to move ahead in this area since you have to compete with other MCAs and BTech(CS) applicants. So choose your internship/ industrial training very carefully. Do not just go for the cheapest to save money. See the IT company's credentials on the net. for example if someone provide LIVE PROJECTS are they there near the TOP on PORTALS like JUSTDIAL? Or if the company is registered with STPI (Software Technology Parks of India) - all good IT companies are registered with STPI. If a company spends money to market themselves to customers, only then they are able to get LIVE PROJECTS. Also, if you are an average programmer, and if you you're better with creative work, then you can head for web design or even VFX/ Animation since there is a huge requirement coming up in that domain.
