After completing diploma in Electrical engineering you may join lateral B.Tech course in the related field.
To be eligible, you need to score minimum aggregate of 60% marks in the diploma course. You need to sit for Lateral Entry Entrance Test or LEET which is conducted at state level. Some colleges and Universities too conduct their own lateral entry tests.

To take admission in Merchant Navy, you need to pass 12th in Science (Physics, Chemistry, Maths) with 1 year pre-sea training as a deck cadet.
You can also join it directly after B.Tech in marine engineering, mechanical, electrical, electronics & telecommunication, naval architect.
If you pursue B.Sc (Nautical Science) in the officer cadre, it will lead you to become captain after 5-7 years of experience.
Except marine engineering candidates, others have to undergo a 10 months pre-sea training which is offered by many institute and port trusts or recruiting company itself. After that you will be appointed as a 5th or junior engineer. It will take 5-7 years depending on your abilities to become 'chief engineer'.

* Training Ship Chanakya, (TS Chanakya) Navi Mumbai - The admission procedure of this Institute is through the Joint Entrance Exam (JEE) conducted by the Indian Institute of Technology.
* Marine Engineering & Research Institute (MERI), Kolkata – In order to apply to this Institute, the candidates should clear the Joint Entrance Exam (JEE) held by the IIT.
* Marine Engineering & Research Institute (MERI), Mumbai- Candidates who are interested in applying to this institute should have a degree in Mechanical Engineering or in Naval Architecture from the recognized Institute of AICTE.
