The primary and secondary papers in GATE 2026 are termed in case of the two-paper combination. It allows aspirants to appear for two GATE papers (they have chosen) relevant to their stream and eligibility. The GATE paper cominations are decided by the GATE authorities to give candidates a chance to increase their career prospects and enhance their skill set.

Here's a break down of what exactly the GATE primary and secondary paper means -

GATE 2026 Primary Paper 

This is the main subject paper which alligns the core academic background of the student. Candidates must caefully choose their primary paper, as it typically detremines their eligibility criteria for M.Tech admissions and PSU recruitment.

For example, if your background is Mechanical Engineering, then your GATE primary paper is ME. 

GATE 2026 Secondary Paper

The secondary paper is the additional paper that complements your primary paper. Candidates can select from the given paper combinations issued by the authorities.

For example, if you are selecting Electronics and Communication (EC), then you are accepted/relevant GATE paper combinations are - computer Science (CS), data Science (DA), electrical engineering (EE), instrumentation engineering (IN), physics (PH), and life sciences (XL).

While doing the GATE 2026 registration, make sure to check the paper codes and combinations carefully before submitting. 

When you apply to GATE 2026, and you make a wrong selection of paper code, then you have a time frame to rectify the mistake, and the rectification occurs in the official application correction period. Once you have submitted your first application, IIT (the organizing institute) would provide the correction period, typically a couple of weeks after registration is complete, and attend to a log in to GATE Online Application Processing System (GOAPS) and make edits on your selected paper code.

The way the error can be corrected is as follows:

Attention: During correction period, log in to GOAPS with your Enrollment ID and password.

Choose the option of editing the application.

Change your GATE paper code as one of your choice (you can change the other allowed details also according to the instructions).

Pay the necessary correction amount which is approximately 500 rupees (changes of the code flag in the paper ) it would be given in the portal.

Important notes:

It is only during the window when correction can be made. After this window is closed, you would not be able to do any other changes to your selected paper code.

Be sure you find the appropriate paper code depending on the major you expect to complete at the time of submission of the correction.

So, when you lose the window or fail to make the correction, you will be forced to appear in the exam on basis of the paper code that you had initially chosen and which may not jive with your admission or career interests.

Now then, when you notice that you have entered the incorrect code of paper, then you have to do some quick analysis during the correction time and correct your mistake without any kind of complications in your GATE 2026 test and future admissions

There are 30 paper codes or subjects in GATE 2026 itself and as per current official the latest updates also, no new paper codes or totally new subjects have been added to GATE 2026. The most recent ones were in the past years when papers such as Data Science and Artificial Intelligence (DA), Environmental Science & Engineering (ES), and Geomatics Engineering (GE) and Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering (NM) were introduced.

Regarding 2026, the same set exists in IIT Guwahati (the organizing institute):

There are all of the previous topics and these newer interdisciplinary topics as DA (Data Science & Artificial Intelligence), ES, GE, NM and XH (Humanities & Social Sciences).

As of July 26, 2025, the organizers have not issued any official announcements regarding the further or even the entirely new topics in 2026.

Other important points:

Combination of two papers is still permitted as with the allowed combinations given by the organizing institute but there is no new individual paper to choose from 2026.

The GATE 2026 syllabus is divided into General Aptitude and subject-specific questions in each subject and the pattern is the same as in the previous years.

It is always better to obtain the latest GATE 2026 brochure and the official site before applications are filled because due to the changing situations last-minute announcement can sometimes take place but so far there is none in the case of 2026.

Yes, the counselling of B.Pharmacy 2025 MHT CET has already begun. In short, the GATE paper codes help aspirants to find out their specific subject they want to apply. Entering the wrong paper code can lead to disqualification, as the authorities will tally your educational qualification with your desired branch selection and other factors. Therefore, it is important to recheck the GATE paper codes before adding them to your GATE application form. 

In case you are not allotted the city of your choice in GATE, the authorities organizing GATE will allocate you an alternative city to write gate; in most cases, this would be one of your other choices, though a different city in the same zone. This is done when a specific city has been over-chosen by candidates, or on some operational/ logistical grounds. The GATE committee also has the right of allocating a city that might not possibly appear on your preference list in any case they feel like. Once admit card is released, you will not be able to bring changes in the assigned city; this center is also final and should be accepted.

That is why in the case that no alternative in any of the cities you selected is available, then you will still be assigned with the closest available center there is and the description of the assignment will be on the admit card of your GATE and you will be required to download and follow the directions of the exam as printed on the admit card in taking up the exam
