This is a very good question and a lot of youngsters are confused with the choices they have about their career direction. Let me try answering this by giving a scope of PHP in today's market. PHP is currently the preferred choice of many internet companies as a programming language. Also, there is a severe shortage of good PHP developers in the market so this makes it a good technology to pursue currently.
But then again, as I said above, the demand is for GOOD programmers. You firstly need to develop an aptitude in programming and algorithms if you want to pursue a fulfilling career in software development. Just learning the language might not be enough in today's competitive environment and you will be very quickly out of market when a new programming language becomes a preferred trend. If you are interested in programming and software development, you must start with learning the basics and make your fundamentals strong, like algorithms and data structures. These are the building blocks of software development and are required in all programming languages.
Also, you first need to figure out where your interest lies. If you want to do PHP just because there is a market demand for it, might not be the right approach.

Yes, gap in study is not the criteria for eligibility but degree marks will be important, if you pass CAT. I am giving the criteria:-
CAT Eligibility
The candidate must hold a Bachelor's Degree, with at least 50% marks or equivalent CGPA [45% in case of the candidates belonging to Scheduled Caste (SC), Scheduled Tribe (ST) and Differently Abled (DA) (It may also referred to as Persons with Disability (PWD) category)], awarded by any of the Universities incorporated by an act of the central or state legislature in India or other educational institutions established by an act of Parliament or declared to be deemed as a University under Section 3 of the UGC Act, 1956, or possess an equivalent qualification recognized by the Ministry of HRD, Government of India. The percentage of marks obtained by the candidate in the bachelor's degree would be calculated based on the practice followed by the university/institution from where the candidate has obtained the degree.
Applicants should note that the mere fulfillment of minimum eligibility criteria will not ensure consideration for shortlisting by IIMs.

Hi,
Well you can apply for the below mentioned entrance tests to procure a seat into M.SC program. The eligibility criterion to get admission in M.Sc Physics is that one should have the B.Sc degree from any of the Universities. However, the norms differ for different colleges.
JEST (Joint Entrance Screening Test)
JAM (Joint Admission Test for M.SC)
T I F R (Tata Institute of Fundamental Research)
I would suggest you to visit the above and look for the descriptive help. There are various Research Centers in India and in abroad where M.Sc degree holders in Physics are required for the detailed research in various fields of physics. M.Sc degree holders are also recruited in defense through SSC and CDS. One can also join the research projects in defense in DRDO after their recruitment in DRDO(defense research development organization).

Well I would say if your friend desires to go for further studies, he need to make efforts and at the same time keep a little patience as there lies a step by step process to achieve something great. As per your query, I would suggest him to work hard on his arrears even if he is asked for re-admission, clear them and after successful completion he may apply for any program of higher education.
Always remember that there is no shortcut key to success. He'll have to coin hard work, dedication, concentration and most important time management in order to enjoy the sweet fruit. I understand it might be time consuming but on the contrary it is important for him to follow the right path so that he may get his desired career.
