Both Matte and Digital (Dg as mentioned by you) are completely different in there implementations. Matte paintings are a representation of still pictorial description like that of a scenery, landscape etc. Matte paintings are highly involved in Film making and Entertainment industry where these are held at the background to create the virtual effect.
