Before, I further discuss on this topic I would like to say that the scope of any program largely depends on your Interests, how you perform on the program choosen by you & what are your career aspiratons.Although both the programs are good in their own stride but Mental retardation has a good career scope over MSW. Trained professionals in the field of mental retardation are placed in special schools, or assigned to special classes in regular schools as well as with vocational education or rehabilitation centres.They also have scope of working in paediatric units of hospitals, child guidance clinics, child development centres, rural primary health centres and district health centres.
MSW is a degree in social work and involves a lot of field work so if you are comfortable with field work then you can even opt for MSW as the scope of this program has broadened in recent years to include the specialty practice areas of geriatrics and veterinary social work.
