MBA in general is about choosing what you want to do in life. The branch you choose must be based on which part you will be suited for. I have a major classification based on certain characteristics (This may not be perfect but it pretty much holds good so feel free to agree to disagree
1.Finance - Good in numbers, interest in statistics, not too social, looking to do a PhD, introverts
2.Marketing - Good in communication, good in networking, extroverts and people who are quick on their feet
3.HR Management - Women (not a sexist statement) and people who are more empathetic and good in reading people

There is no thumb rule here. Whatever your domain or area is make sure that you are able to demonstrate enough managerial skills in addition to the technical skills throughout your work tenure. Pick up an area which will give you the space to take initiatives, plan, lead a team and help you make significant and positive changes (to the team or the organization as a whole). MBA is about discussions, case studies and sharing knowledge and your real life challenges. Will you be able to contribute to the class basis your RnD job?
