You should mention your stream. Well, as you didn't mention it, I can't give you the appropriate answer, but for better placements, you can opt for M.Sc, PG Diploma, M.Sc with training, PG Diploma with any other short-term course related to your stream.

Instead of looking for books, I would suggest you to go for IIT JAM Study Materials. These study materials include all the preparation stuff including unit-wise notes & question papers, important topics, previous year papers and many more. Books are available separately for different topics. So, it's better to buy the study materials and start preparing for the exam.

I would say that mechanical engineering has better placements than biotechnology as only few colleges offer it and some of those colleges are not good too.
So you may opt for mechanical engineering.
It is better to choose a good college than a good course as it will help you in future.
If you want to do biotechnology you may do it From IIT Madras, Anna University or SSN College of Engineering.
