Hello,
A lateral entry student is the one who directly enters into the second year of his engineering. He/she must have completed a Diploma in their respective branch to be eligible for the lateral entry programme. After completing the Diploma, he/she writes a special examination for enrollment in an institute. -
Those who have completed three years recognised Polytechnic Diploma and have cleared state level lateral entry admission test can seek admission through lateral entry scheme to third semester of a B Tech programme at government aided, self financing and private aided colleges in the state.

In the first year in B.Tech, syllabus of all the engineering branch is same. That's why Diploma holder may take admission in Direct 2nd year. If you have done any Diploma course in engineering, you can take admission in engineering through lateral entry. http://rimt.ac.in/b-tech-hons-lateral-entry-all-branches.php.
