Why are IITs being given special preference for funding whereas NITs are not while both are centrally funded government institutions?

    That is because IITs, specifically the seven original ones, continue to be at forefront of our efforts in engineering, technology and research. they continue to be ahead in terms of the faculty, infrastructure and the quality of students and hence continuing to have differential investment in these premier institutes makes perfect sense.
    Although, we must make conscious efforts to improve NITs and other engineering colleges too.

    The answer to this question includes political as well as logical touch although both the institutions are centrally funded. There is a large gap between the quality of students getting seats in an IIT as compared to the one getting a seat in NIT. Also, the government has to maintain a good image for the technical education system of India so the preference is given to the IITs. Although the amount of money does not very much which is around 3500 crores a year. The money issued for officials working in the institution, the fests held and the job perspective is more for IITs again for creating a good image worldwide. Also, the governmen

    When it comes to the quality of education provided IITs are ahead of the NITs. The professors in the IITs are better and more qualified than the NITs. The way of education and approach is also better in IIT, but it doesn't mean that NITs are not good. Both IITs and NITs are extremely good in providing education and producing good engineers, but at the same time, the top IIT colleges have an edge because of their high standard of studies.
    Hence special preferred to IIT students over NITs.
