Why do we need to do internship? Is internship compulsory in an engineering college? Will it help me in my placements?

    'Internship' from the perspective of engineering colleges in India primarily is aimed at giving an industry exposure, and involves people taking up trainee positions in companies which deal with the sub-branch of their choice. However, people interested in research usually engage in research projects at IIT's/IISc or universities in the US/Canada/Europe/Australia.     Recent survey of senior executives in Indian corporate world has indicated that majority of fresh engineering graduates are not employable because the most of Engineering syllabus is theoretical and students have limited practical exposure. Therefore, in order to bridge gap between industry expectation and teaching, engineering colleges are encouraging students to take internship with industry to get an exposure on industrial environment.     If my understanding is right, then 6-weeks of industrial training is the mandatory part of engineering curriculum irrespective of the Institute. The objective of industrial training is to provide an exposure to industrial/professional working environment which happens to be significantly different from the college/campus environment and hence in a way prepares students for the upcoming professional life.

    Recently, HRD minister Prakash Javadekar made it compulsory for engineering students to have minimum 3 internships. First of all, you need to know that having knowledge is a different thing and able to apply it in real situations is completely another aspect. Due to lack of experience, 60-70% of engineering students in India end up unemployed.

    Yes, recently internship in engineering colleges has been made compulsory (minimum three internships). There are lots of benefits of doing internship such as:
