'Internship' from the perspective of engineering colleges in India primarily is aimed at giving an industry exposure, and involves people taking up trainee positions in companies which deal with the sub-branch of their choice. If my understanding is right, then 6-weeks of industrial training is the mandatory part of engineering curriculum irrespective of the Institute. The objective of industrial training is to provide an exposure to industrial/professional working environment which happens to be significantly different from the college/campus environment and hence in a way prepares students for the upcoming professional life.In addition, to the above, it also helps through following:1.
