How can I become a Ground Staff? What kind of starting salary can I expect?

Any airline operates on time only when a collective effort from both Aircrew and Ground crew is put to task. In aviation, ground crew or ground staff are the support personnel that service aircraft on the ground as opposed to aircrew, who operate an aircraft while in flight. The term ground crew is used by both airlines and military aviation. Airline ground crew members include: Airframe and power plant technicians, avionics technicians, ramp agents, customer service agents, and flight dispatchers. Ground crew members are responsible for clearing the runway and GATE area of any debris or garbage, in order to prevent foreign object damage by an object being sucked into an engine. The crew visually inspects the tarmac and removes any items found; this is typically called a "FOD walk" and is done prior to an aircraft's arrival and departure. As explained ground staff are responsible for a variety of job assigned at each level. To join this course, you need class 12 or 10+2 in Arts, Science, Commerce or any other field. A 3-year diploma in engineering or other field, from a state board of technical education, is also credible. Salaries for ground staff are in the range of INR 25k to 65k initially. It keeps increasing as you rouse in hierarchy.

Hello, With the boom in passenger traffic in India, opportunities for employment in all spheres of air transportation and associated areas have increased manifold. Passenger traffic is increasing at the rate if more than 15% per annum and this has resulted in airlines ordering aero planes from Airbus as well as Boeing, increase in number of personnel required as ground staff is bound to increase. However, due to business reasons, almost all airlines have either outsourced or formed subsidiary companies to take care of ground handling. Thus the personnel are recruited by these subsidiary or specialized companies. It is definitely niche job that requires knowledge of safety aspects of airside and strict adherence to SOP's and protocols. The salaries are definitely good as compared with outside world, but a bit lower than those employed by airlines directly. There are plenty of institutions imparting training. This typically lasts about 3-4 months. Anybody with +2 can think of this job.

The Aviation boom in India has filled the market with a lot of aviation related job opportunities. The ground staff department of an airline is the strongest department by numbers, as every airline needs to have their staff at every airport in the country they operate in. Not only the domestic carriers, but also all the international carriers flying in to India have their own set of ground staff at the airports they fly to. So there are a lot of job opportunities for freshers in this field. Several companies like Indigo Airlines and SpiceJet have walk-in Interviews for the position of ground staff once every few weeks. An aspiring candidate can keep up to date with the dates of the next interviews by following these airlines on social media or regularly checking the careers page on the airline website. Although not every airline hires males in their cabin crew departments, the post of ground staff is open for both male and female. Usually for Freshers, graduation in any field is a compulsory requirement and the minimum age limit is 18 years with some airlines capping the age limit to a maximum of 27 years. Along with the educational qualification, a candidate must have fluent English speaking skills along with a bright attitude and a sharp mind. Responsibilities of ground staff range from handling the ticket counter, to guiding the passengers to the ferry buses as well as solving customer grievances. It is a tough job with rotational shifts and a person working as ground staff has to undergo regular training to keep up with the new company SOPs and security drills. But along with the hard work, there are also many perks offered to ground staff such as free tickets for the family, cheap hotel stays and Sodexho food coupons. A fresher in this industry can expect anywhere between 17000 INR to 24000 INR as a starting salary and that can go up with experience.
