A UGC approved university doesn't need AICTE approval. The Supreme Court has ruled in the famous Bharathidasan University versus AICTE case that it is not obligatory for a university, created under an Act of a competent legislature, to seek and secure prior approval of the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) to start a department for imparting a course or programme in technical education or a technical institution as an adjunct to the university itself to conduct technical courses of its choice and selection. What it means is that the AI

As per law, universities don't require approval from AICTE to run its courses. It's the institutes which are affiliated to universities needs AICTE approval. As LPU is a Bonafide University established by a State Act, it does not require AICTE approval.
    Universities need recognition from UGC.
Lovely Professional University (LPU), Jalandhar is recognized by UGC (University Grant Commission).
Universities need approval for certain professional courses from the concerned Councils which regulate the courses in a certain discipline such as Medicine, Pharmacy, Law, Architecture, Distance Learning, etc.

LPU is not approved by AICTE. To the best of my knowledge, a university doesn't need AICTE approval to run any technical programme if already recognised by UGC. Well, Lovely Professional University is recognised by the University Grants Commission (UGC), a statutory body of the Government of India for the coordination, determination and maintenance of standards of university education in India, under section 2 (f) of the UGC ACT 1956. AICTE approval is not required for a university to run a course in technical education as has been held by the Hon'ble Supreme Court in its judgment CWP2056 of 1999 titled Bharathidasan University & ANR.

Hi Sudipto, LPU is not AICTE approved because it does not need the approval. LPU is an independent UGC recognised university. AICTE approval is not required for a university to run a course in technical education as has been held by the Hon'ble Supreme Court in its judgment CWP2056 of 1999 titled Bharathidasan University & ANR. V/S ALL INDIA COUNCIL FOR TECHNICAL EDUCATION & ORS, and various other cases. If any college is already approved by UGC, then approval from AICTE is not necessary.

AICTE approval is not obligatory for LPU because LPU is a UGC-approved university. As per the supreme court ruling, this approval is mandatory only for technical institutions. However, LPU is affiliated with the Distance Education Council. In addition to it, the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) and the Council of Architecture (COA) and approved by the Pharmacy Council of India (PCI). It is also a member of the Association of Indian Universities (AIU). LPU was the first university to get approval from ICAR (Indian Council of Agricultural Research). Lovely Professional University (LPU) is a recognised private university established under the Punjab State Private University Act and is approved by the University Grants Commission (UGC).
