As Civil Service Examinations are tough nut to crack it would be advisable that you join some coaching Institute as the faculty their can give you proper guidance and direction as to how and what all you should prepare. However, if you are planning for self study then I would suggest you to first clear fundamentals of the subjects you are going to opt for apart from that as the pattern of Prelim has changed you have to focus on your decision making skills, logical and analytical abilities and the knowledge in the services in which you want to pursue your career instead of subject Knowledge only. So keeping these factors in mind prepare for prelims.
Mains: the preparation of Mains should start at least a year in advance. Just because you have to prepare for Essay, GS and the two optional you never get enough time (to prepare for all these). The strategy would be same as for prelim but here you have to work on your subject knowledge as well. Take the optional subjects keeping in mind your own interests and choose the subjects you feel comfortable with

Hi Satish, on an average it will cost you 12- 14 lacs at a decent university. The living expenses are set at GBP 5400 outside London and GBP 7200 within London per annum by the High Commission. The tuition fee varies from univ to univ.
AS far as the marks are concerned, you should have a minimum of 60% in UG from a reputed Indian University to be able to get admission.

Documents required to apply for admission- Class 10 and 12 marksheets and Passing certificate, sem wise or year wise marksheets, degree certificate or provsional certificate, Statement of Purpose, Letters of Recommendation(2), Work experience letters from all employers (if any), CV (if you have work ex or are applying for MBA), A copy of your passport(1st and Last Page), IELTS ( 6.5 min for PG courses). IELTS can be submitted later on if not already written.
