Hi,
The basic eligibility to take CUCET is to pass class 12 with 50% marks and 45% for reserved category. Your 12th marks are not added in CUCET but required to take CUCET. During admissions on merit basis universities will check both your class 12th and CUCET score.

You can get admission in mechanical engineering at the SRM main campus with a rank of 26,000. However, last year's closing rank for the Chennai main branch was 31,000. You can take part in the counseling. 

SRM has more seats available for mechanical and civil departments. The Chennai campus of SRM is considered the best for mechanical engineering.

Let me explain you the admission system here. Rank in VIT to get admission should be 90,000. So, you can get admission in VIT from the 6th category as well. There are various categories as well with each category admission fees go high. First category closed till 15,000 rank and you can get CSE till 9000 rank and IT till 11000 rank but there are 2nd category as well if you want CSE but you have to pay more for that. Bhopal and Amravati branches are opened recently. So, the rank for VIT university may go high as expected. The authorities concerned will announce the list of participating institutes of TNEA 2018 for candidates who are aspiring to take admission in the undergraduate engineering programmes but VIT university does not come under the participating institute of TNEA so it is not possible. Marks varies from year to year. What matters is the percentiles. The cut-off percentile for OBC category revolves around 75 to 80 every year. So, calculate your chances accordingly. And for the last date, check the ACPC website regularly.
