There are 3 steps involved in higher education in US. The course we call MBBS here is known as MD in USA. This is first step. You have already completed your first step of medical education from Ukraine
Step 2:
There are no degrees equivalent to MD or MS of India. After graduation and getting the MD degree (MBBS equivalent), doctors can do RESIDENCY in a particular discipline and have to take the respective Board Certification examination (for eg. ABIM, American Board of Internal Medicine) after completion of training (usually 3-4 years, may include 1-2 years of research) to be able to practice that particular discipline.
Step: 3
The superspecialties here are called subspecialties and the training is called FELLOWSHIP. At the end of the fellowship training, the doctor will have to take the Board Certification examination, that is equivalent to the DM and MCh examination in India. Duration of fellowship for the medicine related subspecialties is typically 3 years and that of different surgery related subspecialties may vary.
Basic pre-requisite : To get certified by the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduate (ECFMG).
