You don't need any formal degree to be a musician though you might have to join some short term certificate or diploma course related to music.
Music is all about reaching out to the people and getting appreciation for the same and for that you need to have a genuine love for music, a musical sense, which means a sense of time and rhythm, besides versatility, creative ability and also stage confidence. At the same time one needs to have publicity- contacts with the right people, money for training and for making demo cassettes for commercialization.
