Yes, it is mandatory to get a CCNA certification in order to get CCNP certification. However, you can still write any of the exams from CCNP track without passing CCNA, but even if you pass all the exams of CCNP track without CCNA, Cisco will not give you the CCNP certificate unless you pass CCNA. Yes, it can be useful if you want to move or are already working in a telecom company. However, sources say this certification will be valid till 15 Aug 2015 and then expire. So you would be better off going for the CCNA collaboration certificate. But overall if you are from a reputed institute then you dont need to worry too much about certifications as a fresher for finding jobs.

Unfortunately, CCNA cannot be studied over a week's time. The core CCNA certification can be obtained by passing a single 90-minute written exam. The exam has no prerequisites, although Cisco and other companies offer various formal training courses to help students prepare. Topics covered on the CCNA exam include
* LAN and WAN design (including the OSI model)
* IP addressing
* routers and routing protocols (including OSPF, EIGRP and RIP)
* VLAN (virtual LAN) and WLAN (wireless LAN)
* network security and management (including ACLs)
