The eligibility criteria varies widely, getting into a top college in India will be next to impossible since the cut-offs are high however it depends on what you want to study. Certain courses require entrance exams like CET etc., if you do really well in these tests you do have a chance. Try not to secure less than 60% for better outcome.

The minimum eligibility is just class 12th and at least 18 years of age.
Candidate profile for freshers:
Age: Between 18 and 27 years.
Minimum Height: Men-170 centimetres and Women-157 centimetres.
Weight: In proportion to height.
Educational Qualification: HSC (10 + 2). Candidates who are appearing for their HSC examinations can also apply.
Physical features: Pleasing personality, clear complexion (scars, pimples and blemishes not acceptable) and good eyesight.
Marital Status: Unmarried.
Language skills: Fluency in English and Hindi. Proficiency in a foreign language will be an added advantage.

There's a lot of difference between these two institutions. St. Xavier's college is just a college, and St. Xavier University is a university. There's a lot of difference between a college and a university. St. Xavier's college still offers degrees under the name of Calcutta University and will continue to do so for the upcoming three years at least. But St. Xavier's University will offer degrees under its own name after the first session starts from this July. There are states in India such as Tamil Nadu that offer admission to engineering based on class 12th PCM scores. There is no state entrance examinations in such states.
