A PhD may be undertaken by three different means:
Traditional PhD:
A PhD candidate's work is assessed on the basis of a thesis which generally comprises between 80,000 and 100,000 words.
PhD by Publication:
A PhD candidate's work is assessed on the basis of the submission of a thesis containing a number scholarly publications such as peer reviewed journal articles.
PhD by Project:
A PhD candidate's work is assessed on the basis of a submission of a portfolio of project works, including but not limited to; a durable record of performance, exhibition of visual arts, writing, design, film, multimedia, CD, DVD, software program or other creative works.

Since you are from the Engg. background both the areas are good in their own aspects. Both the areas have good scope. It depends on what area you are interested in.
First of all I would like to suggest u that whatever u r doing do it thoroughly. Clear your fundamental concepts. It should not be like that making second floor without any foundations.
Industry requires technically sound professionals not the theoretical persons.
Lots of career lines are there in IT industry. System Admin, Network Admin, Security Admin, Database Admin, Software Developer, Web Developer and many more. Most of the Servers are running on Linux Servers.
If u choose Linux platform as ur career option will be the futuristic approach. RHCE, RHCSS, RHCEV, JBOSS, LAMP, WAMP, XAMP CCNA, MCSE, JCP, OCP are some of the Leading Specialization areas where u can get some International kind of quality Certification.
If you have keen interest in Software Development, You can go ahead with .Net Certifications from Microsoft like MCSP or MCSD. They have very good scope in market. If possible you can also go for Cloud Programming.
