Yes, why not, if you consistently fail in IIT then definitely, you will be expelled and its the case for any college across India. Well, students always fail courses at IIT. The number of for (Fail Repeat) grades awarded depends upon the professor and varies in each department. Generally, in my department (Chemical engineering) on an average 5% for grades are awarded. The maximum might go around 25-35% of the class sometimes. Generally, people scrape through exams by studying the last 2 days before the exams but in some cases, due to tough question papers set by the professor they fail to get minimum marks (which the professor decides later on). Students from General category don't fail too often where are as students from SC/ST categories find it difficult to cope up with other students. So, some of them fail in 1 or 2 courses every semester. I personally feel that getting a few for grades at IIT doesn't effect the ego of the students much. But I have seen a few students whose confidence level drop and start believing that they will fail some of the courses next semester. *for grade - The student has to repeat the whole course again in subsequent semesters. P. S: This is my personal opinion and I certainly don't know what a person goes through as I have never got a for grade so far.
