Dear Jigar, research in any field can be done through literature survey, simulation/survey and actual experimental work, in two manners:-
(a) Select an area of interest for research and join an UGC recognized university to pursue Ph.D.
(b) Join a R&D organization like DRDO labs, ISRO, BARC, TIFR, Adobe, Google, IBM, Biocon, Ranbaxy, TCIL etc.
There are thousands of researchers are working in India in the fields of engineering, sociology, environment, bio-technology, nano-technology, drug and chemical molecules, optronics, ophthalmology, optical switching, channel optimization in wireless communication, data integrity, data warehousing, data security, satellite imagery and so on. Usually, in the research field, candidates are taken in the post of Scientist -B, C,D, E, F , G and H as per seniority. In engineering field, candidate has to be an engineer.
You can not say that I want to research in data structure but you will have to pick a specific problem and then find solution through research. Most organizations or Universities do not accept MCAs for Ph.D or research work, they have to be M.Tech. There are some universities, NITs and C-DAC who offer direct Ph.D after B.E./B.Tech but I am not aware whether they accept MCAs.
In IITs, Ph.D. takes minimum 5 years, in NITs about 4 years and in private deemed universities 3 years. There is no cost other than tuition fees which can be as low as Rs. 7000 in government institutions to Rs. 70,000/- per year in private universities. In government institutions Ph.D. scholars are given stipend to the tune of Rs. 22,000/- per month.
In organizations like Adobe research center Noida, talented engineers are paid handsome salaries just to do research which can be patented.
In India only IITs and some top universities and the organizations mentioned by me, are involved in serious research of high quality.
