Mechanical and electrical engineering are core branches of engineering.
Mechanical engineering is the discipline that applies the principles of engineering, physics, and materials Science for the design, analysis, manufacturing and maintenance of mechanical systems. It is the branch of engineering that involves the design, production, and operation of machinery. It is one of the oldest and broadest of the engineering disciplines. Mechanical engineers are employed in operations and Maintenance roles in manufacturing and services industry. It is an evergreen branch with no cyclic trend in job market.
Electrical engineering is a field of engineering that generally deals with the study and application of electricity, electronics, and electromagnetism. Electrical engineering has now subdivided into a wide range of sub-fields including electronics, digital computers, power engineering, telecommunications, control systems, radio-frequency engineering, signal processing, instrumentation and microelectronics etc.
Electrical engineers are employed in operations and maintenance roles in manufacturing and services industry. Electrical engineers are also employed in electrical power generations such as atomic power plants, hydel or thermal power plants. Electrical engineers are also employed in power distribution and services companies. Job opportunities for electrical engineers are available in both private and public sector like railways, civil aviation, electricity board and utility companies, electrical design and consultancy firms.
In addition, mechanical and electrical engineers can join Indian Engineering Services, DRDO, ISO, Defence and paramilitary forces also. Mechanical and electrical engineers are also employed in teaching and R&D besides working as independent consultant.

In order to seek admission in IIT, you are advised to appear for Joint Entrance Examination (JEE). JEE is an all India common engineering entrance examination of objective pattern which is conducted for admission in various engineering colleges and courses all over the country. It is regarded internationally as one of the most challenging engineering admission tests. JEE consists of two parts, JEE Main and JEE Advanced. JEE-Advanced is for admission to IITs, while the JEE-Main exam is for admission to NITs, IIITs, Centrally Funded Technical Institutes (CFTIs). Only the students selected in JEE Mains are eligible for appearing in JEE Advanced.

The Indian Maritime University is a Central University, which was established by Government of India for imparting quality education in the maritime field. It has an All-India jurisdiction and the headquarters is at Chennai. It has campuses at Chennai, Kolkata, Mumbai, Visakhapatnam and Cochin. University conducts degree and post graduate courses on nautical science, marine engineering, ship building and international transportation and logistics management. Lots of private colleges are affiliated to IMU. IMU conducts its own entrance namely All India Common Entrance Test. You have options of doing and excel in M.Com, MBA, MCA or LLB or PG Diploma or Industry certifications after B.Com. M.Com focuses on commerce, accounting, management and economics related subjects and prepares you for Finance and Accounting jobs in enterprises. MBA is a generic course on business management and administration and it focuses on functional areas of business such as accounting, finance, marketing, human resources and operations. MBA provides wider options in different functions and various types of industries. Although you must do post graduate degree based on your interest area, I will recommend MBA with finance specialization for better career opportunities and growth. You are also eligible for 3-year LLB to become a lawyer and specialize in direct or indirect taxes.
You are eligible to do MCA if had maths at 12th stage to have career in IT industries as an application developer/ tester. You had also do one year long PG diploma in area of your interests such as banking, insurance, capital market, HR, sales, etc. You can also do industry specific certifications such as CMA, LOMA, CFA, SAP, etc.
