Geologists study the earth's history, composition & structure. Geologists play an important part in the study, exploration, preservation and cleaning up of the environment.
The study of geology includes mineralogy (study of minerals) paleontology (study of fossils); structural geology (study of forces working on the earth's crust); geomorphology (the study of the formation of the earth's crust with its various land forms).
Specialist Geologists are:
- Engineering geologists.
- Environmental geologists.
- Marine geologists.
- Petroleum geologists, etc.
In order to be successful in this field you need to have below mentioned skills:
- Scientific acumen.
- Power of observation, analysis, logic.
- Adaptability to work alone or in a group.
In order to be a geologists you need to be:
- XII (PCM) Graduate degree in Geology . Admission to university courses is merit based.
- XII (with PCM) IIT Kharagpur admits students through JEE to 5 year Integrated program in Exploration Geophysics.
- After BTech/BE/MSc and Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) admission is made to the 3 semester M Tech in Geology and Geophysics in IIT.
Entry through UPSC:
Postgraduates in Geology/Applied Geology/Marine Geology/Mineral exploration/Hydrogeology or Associates in Applied Geology of the Indian School of Mines at Dhanbad are eligible to appear in the examination. They should be between 21 to 30 years in age. The examination has 5 papers (English, 3 papers in Geology, Hydrogeology).
Geological Survey of India puts freshly recruited candidates through training and an internal examination before posting them to any part in the country.
