Alagappa University is recognised by the University Grants Commission (UGC), New Delhi and obtained 2 (f) and 12 (B) status to receive UGC and central government grants. In 2017 the university obtained A+ Grade with CGPA of 3.64 grade by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC). Alagappa University is the first State University in Tamil Nadu to obtain the coveted A+ grade. In 2018, the university obtained Category–1 status and Autonomy status by the MHRD-UGC and also secured 4th position in MHRD-Swachhta Ranking 2018 for the cleanest Government Higher Educational Institutions in India. For UG courses, candidates must have completed 10+2 from any recognised university. For PG courses candidates must be graduated from any recognised university. Candidate who has passed a three-year Diploma are also eligible to apply.

M.A. - Candidates must have completed Bachelor Degree from a recognised University with Tamil as a course.

B.Sc. - candidates who have passed a three-year Diploma with maths are also eligible.

BCA - candidates who have passed a three-year Diploma are also eligible

M.Sc. - Candidates must have complete Graduation in B.Sc. Mathematics/Applied Mathematics from recognised University/Institute.

MCA - candidate should have studied 10+2+3 pattern with Mathematics/Statistics/Business Mathematics in +2 level.

Directorate of Distance Education Alagappa University has made the application process possible through online mode only. The application fee for the entrance-based programme is Rs. 600 and for non-entrance & PG Diploma Programme is Rs. 400. The application fee for UG and 5 Year-Integrated Programme is Rs. 250; for Diploma and Certificate Programme the fee is Rs. 150. Application fee concession is available for SC / ST candidates. Physically challenged candidates are exempted from the payment of Tuition fee and Special Fee. Alagappa University offers a full-time two-year MSc programme in different disciplines. Admission to MSc (Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics & Microbiology) programmes is done based on the entrance exam (50% weightage) and marks obtained in the qualifying examination (50% weightage) whereas admission to the MSc (Biotechnology) course is done based on the entrance test and interview marks. Admission to the remaining MSc programmes is done based on marks obtained in the qualifying examination only. Candidate should have completed Graduate/Bachelors degree (10+2+3 or 10+2+4) or equivalent in Computer Science / Computer Applications / Mathematics / other relevant stream from a recognised university to be eligible.

Alagappa University MBA course is offered through the Alagappa Institute of Management. The PG-level programme is offered in six specialisations apart from MBA (general), including Logistics Management, International Business, Tourism Management, etc. The total tuition fee for the course ranges between INR 5,500 and INR 8.8 lakh. Candidates can take the entrance exam conducted by the university to be eligible for admission. Alagappa University MBA (General) course is structured around a Choice Based Credit System (CBCS). The university also offers online MBA courses. After the final selection, aspirants need to pay the Alagappa University MBA fee for seat confirmation.

The Directorate of Distance Education was established in the Alagappa University during the year 1992. The Directorate offers Under Graduate and Post Graduate Programmes in the disciplines of Arts, Science, Education and Management. There are two sessions of admission every year, July session (from 1st July to 31st August) and the January session (from 1st January to 28th February).
