UPSC Examinations is a tuff nut to crack and needs lot of focus, hard work & perseverance. For preparation you can either join coaching or do self study, few of the important things to remember you need to do a lot of hard work (as there is no short cut to hard work), proper utilization of resources and Proper Time Management. Also keep yourself updated on current affairs (read News papers especially the editorial part, watch news channels) & work on your language skills (read novels, work on your grammar & vocabulary). Apart from this I would suggest to brush up your own subject knowledge as well which will help you for you

Different people will have different opinion on study system of various colleges. So, I would suggest that rather than focusing on other peoples opinions and views you should concentrate on your own performance on the program. As there is no shortcut to hard work if you study with all the concentration and in a focused manner, whether the marking pattern is strict or lenient, good or bad it would not affect you.
