If you have home state quota, you will get a seat in Mechanical branch. Otherwise, it is highly unlikely that you will get a seat in mechanical in the preliminary rounds of counselling. However, after the preliminary rounds, there is option for internal sliding and there is also an option of branch change at the end of first year if you have a CGPA of 8.5 and above. Yeah it would definitely be a good option. One of my friend is studying there .Its has good facilities and all.It also offers good placements as it has tie up with many IT companies in Mysore and Bangalore. So I think it would be a great option.

Nope. Software engineering eventually becomes all about logic and basic mathematics.
You should learn some programming though to keep a better handle on these buzzwords like APIs, SQL, database, etc. These skills might give you a competitive edge even if you have a basic understanding and little touch.
