Frankly speaking Mechanical Engineering degree in itself is more than sufficient to give you a stable career and good job opportunities provided you do it religiously and perform well on the programme. Mechanical engineering is a booming field which has several cross functional fields which one can get into, like electronics, Computer, aeronautical etc. so; rest assured there would be no dearth of job opportunities if you are a performer.

When we talk about top notch institutes they are good in every respect and it really doesn't matter if they are ranked 1st or 5th reason being that lot of money and efforts are put in to built up their infrastructure, study material, to bring the best of companies on campus, etc. so ranking will not make much of a difference.
However, few of the top notch Institutes under XAT are: XLRI-BM, XLRI-PMIR, XIMB, SP Jain, GIM, LIBA etc.
