Media line itself is so challenging and film making will be more of skill based. To start your career in film direction it is necessary for you to gain knowledge about the basic aspects of film making such as Direction, Cinematography,Camera angles, market demand as in what type of films or T.V. shows are in, etc. So i would suggest you join some course related to Film making and direction so that you gain the relevant knowledge. As you are planning to pursue it from FTII, I would say that it is a reputed institute and the course offered by them is also very good.
In order to gain some work ex I would suggest you to join some good production house or an AD agency as a trainee to groom yourself or another good option for you can be to start shooting documentary films, do it as a free lancer or join any NGO and make a documentary for them and then you can apply to big production houses or if you have enough funds you can start your own production. But first i would suggest you to go for film making course.

As mentioned on the website, Goodbye JEE, welcome ISEET from 2013
The successor to the JEE and AIEEE — for long the gateways to India's top engineering colleges including the IITs — will be called ISEET, the Indian Science Engineering Eligibility Test, the new, SAT-style exam comes into force in 2013.
The government will scrap all engineering entrance exams, including the IIT-JEE and the AIEEE, from 2013-14 and reduce the stress levels of students.
ISEET will have two parts, Main and Advance, each of three hours duration. Both tests will be given on the same day, between 10 am and 5 pm. ISEET 2013 will be held in either March or April.
ISEET Main will be an objective type exam, and will test comprehension, critical thinking and logical reasoning. ISEET Advance will test problem-solving ability in basic science subjects. The two tests together will indicate a candidate's scholastic level and aptitude for science and engineering.
