Hi, There is navigating officer on ships, not ship pilots. Your son will have to pursue merchant navy in order to become a part of the ship crew. There are two ways of becoming a navigating officer.
1. Through a 3-year degree course of B.Sc. In nautical Science and then get placed in a company. Many colleges and universities offer this course.
2. Another way is through a Diploma course which is called DNS (Diploma in Nautical Science). You must get sponsorship from a company for a job.

Yes,
Most important factor that makes one college better than other is campus recruitment.
So, if you want to get placed in private company like TCS or any other software companies, then YCCE is better than GHRCE.
Scoring high pointer is easy in GHRCE.
But, YCCE is strict about examination and use of unfair means.
Infrastructure of GHRCE is better than YCCE.
Area wise, YCCE is greater than GHRCE and is covered with lots of greenery.

1. HKBK
2. KCCITM
3. GL Bajaj College
I arranged them in terms of Infrastructure, facilities, faculty, placements and also level of education as well.
This is my preference, but all three are good. There is only a slight difference.
