Home science is an interdisciplinary field of knowledge, which draws upon many disciplines such as chemistry, physics, physiology, biology, hygiene, economics, rural development, child development, sociology and family relations, community living, art, food and nutrition, fabric and apparel designing, clothing, textiles, human development, resource management and communication and home management.
Home science graduates can seek careers in the fields of community and social work as well as in NGOs, food and nutrition related activities in hospitals, and food services. Postgraduate degree holders have better career opportunities.
Apart from working in the above areas of joining the teaching profession as associate professor, assistant professor and head/professor in universities and colleges, education officers, social workers, psychologists and researchers can develop programs for media. Scholars of home science can also work as nutrition consultants, research assistants, food scientists, demonstrators or food analysts.
They can also work independently as family counsellors. Career option in sales promotion of food products, baby foods, and ready to cook foodstuffs is also there. One can be absorbed in food preservation production unit of any hotel, tourist resort, restaurant, food industry. Those who specialize in textile and clothing and family housing and furnishing can undertake design related activities.
