The MBA programmes attract the students on the credibility of the University that they represent. Today the best of the thought leaders in Business Education are out of the purview of the University pattern and run autonomous PGDM programmes that drive the industry expertise in the teaching learning process along with a rich pool of involved academicians.
Given the competitive environment and ever changing industry expectations the safest bet for the student is opt for a PGDM to derive the real life experience in and around him /her during the course. This will ensure a good Return on investment for the aspirant.

The difference between a PhD and FPM is similar to the distinction between an MBA and PGDM. Arguably, the number of prestigious FPMs is higher than that of PhDs.
While IIMs, XLRI, ISB and other stand-alone institutes offer a fellow programme in management (FPM), universities and the IITs and NITs offer a 'PhD' in management.
