1) To take admission in Merchant Navy, you need to pass 12th in Science (Physics, Chemistry, Maths) with 1 year pre-sea training as a deck cadet.
You can also join it directly after B.Tech in marine engineering, mechanical, electrical, electronics & telecommunication, naval architect.
If you pursue B.Sc (Nautical Science) in the officer cadre, it will lead you to become captain after 5-7 years of experience.
Except marine engineering candidates, others have to undergo a 10 months pre-sea training which is offered by many institute and port trusts or recruiting company itself. After that you will be appointed as a 5th or junior engineer. It will take 5-7 years depending on your abilities to become 'chief engineer'.

- Training Ship Chanakya, (TS Chanakya) Navi Mumbai - The admission procedure of this Institute is through Joint Entrance Exam (JEE).
- Marine Engineering & Research Institute (MERI), Kolkata – In order to apply to this Institute, the candidates should clear the Joint Entrance Exam (JEE).
- Marine Engineering & Research Institute (MERI), Mumbai- Candidates who are interested in applying to this institute should have a degree in Mechanical Engineering or in Naval Architecture from the recognized Institute of AICTE. The Admissions are held through JEE and the selection is of the candidates are based on the merit.
- LBS College of Advanced Maritime Studies and Research– Located in Mumbai, The LBS Advanced Maritime Studies and Research Centre is a private institution. The candidates' selection is based on the norms and regulation of the Indira Gandhi National Open University OPEN NET – Merchant Navy Entrance Test.
